AQ PRO - FUNCTIONAL PRINCIPLE OF INDUSTRIAL REVERSE OSMOSIS

Reverse osmosis - is the separation of a portion of the solution from its other part by applying pressure on a semipermeable membrane. During the reverse osmosis process, ionic, organic, and dissolved substances are removed from the solution. Unlike ordinary filtration, membrane filtration operates on the principle of "crossflow filtration". The feed solution (generally feed water) is divided into 2 flows using the RO membrane, permeate and concentrate, which are collected on both sides of the RO membrane. The semipermeable RO membrane allows the passage of purified water (permeate) when sufficient pressure is applied, but rejects dissolved substances, which concentrate in the "concentrate".

The system uses specially wound RO membranes with a unique design for turbulent flow of the solution (water). These membranes accumulate the purified water that has passed through the membrane in the inner tube for permeate.

The feed solution passes through a replaceable mechanical filter with a porosity of 5 microns, which absorbs coarse impurities. The filtered water then flows into the inlet solenoid valve, which opens when the system is turned on, allowing the water to flow into the high-pressure pump's inlet. When the RO system is turned off, this solenoid valve automatically closes to prevent non-turbulent flows in the membranes, which negatively impacts the life of the RO membranes.

The high-pressure pump pushes the feed water into the reverse osmosis membranes, which are arranged in parallel combination. The direction of water flow is always indicated by an arrow on the housing of each membrane. The water is separated by the membranes into two flows: permeate (purified water) and concentrate (concentrated or "dirty water").

Permeate from each membrane is collected into one flow and flows through a water flow meter to the outlet of the RO station. The permeate must be accumulated in a non-pressurized accumulation tank. The permeate may have lower back pressure, but this back pressure must never exceed the final pressure of the concentrate. We must always consider that back pressure at the permeate outlet reduces the performance of the entire RO station and also affects the quality of the output water. The quality of the output water (permeate) always depends on the quality of the feed water and is generally described as the removal of MgSO4 by 96-98%.

After exiting the membrane, the concentrate flows to the flow control center (Concentrate / recycle distribution). At this point, the recycle valve allows a certain amount of concentrate to flow back to the inlet of the high-pressure pump, enabling part of the concentrate to be reused. Such recycling greatly increases the overall yield of the system (up to 75%). The adjustable concentrate valve regulates the amount of concentrate flowing to waste, controls the operational pressure throughout the RO system, and also helps manage yield. Another solenoid valve, installed in parallel with the concentrate valve, is designed for automatic flushing of the RO membranes and is controlled by a microprocessor. Furthermore, the concentrate flows to the concentrate outlet of the RO station and further into the sewage system.
