AQ PRO - OPERATING PRINCIPLE OF INDUSTRIAL REVERSE OSMOSIS

Reverse osmosis - is the separation of one part of a solution from another part by applying pressure to a semi-permeable membrane. During the reverse osmosis process, ionic, organic and dissolved substances are removed from the solution. Unlike ordinary filtration, membrane filtration operates on the principle of "crossflow filtration". The incoming solution (generally inlet water) is divided into 2 streams using the RO membrane, permeate and concentrate, which are collected on both sides of the RO membrane. The semi-permeable RO membrane allows the passage of purified water (permeate) when sufficient pressure is applied, but rejects dissolved substances, which concentrate in the "concentrate".

The system uses specially wound RO membranes with a specific design for turbulent flow of the solution (water). These membranes accumulate purified water that has passed through the membrane in the internal tube for permeate.

The incoming solution passes through a replaceable mechanical filter with a porosity of 5 microns, which absorbs coarse contaminants. The water filtered in this way flows into the inlet solenoid valve, which opens when the system is activated, allowing water to be supplied to the inlet of the high-pressure pump. When the RO system is turned off, this solenoid valve automatically closes, preventing non-turbulent flows in the membranes, which negatively affects the lifespan of the RO membranes.

The high-pressure pump pushes the inlet water into the reverse osmosis membranes, which are arranged in a parallel combination. The direction of water flow is always indicated by an arrow on the housing of each membrane. Water is divided by the membranes into two flows: permeate (purified water) and concentrate (concentrated or "dirty water").

The permeate from each membrane is collected into one stream and flows through the water flow meter to the outlet of the RO unit. The permeate must be accumulated in a non-pressurized storage tank. The permeate may have lower back pressure, but this back pressure must never exceed the final pressure of the concentrate. We must always take into account that back pressure at the permeate outlet causes a reduction in the performance of the entire RO unit and also the quality of the output water. The quality of the output water (permeate) always depends on the quality of the inlet water and is generally described as the removal of MgSO4 96-98%.

After exiting the membrane, the concentrate flows to the flow control center (distributing Concentrate / recycle). At this point, the recycle valve allows a certain amount of concentrate to flow back to the inlet of the high-pressure pump, allowing the reuse of part of the concentrate. Such recycling significantly increases the overall yield of the system (up to 75%). The adjustable concentrate valve regulates the amount of concentrate flow to waste, controls the operating pressure in the entire RO system and also helps control the yield. Another solenoid valve, which is mounted parallel to the concentrate valve, is designated for the automatic flushing of the RO membranes and is controlled by a microprocessor. Furthermore, the concentrate flows to the concentrate outlet of the RO unit and further into the sewer.
